----------------------------------------- Birdsong falls silent— the sudden breadth of the water. ----------------------------------------- Beginning with saezuri—a spring season word for birdsong—the haiku captures the moment when sound disappears and the expanse of the water suddenly comes into awareness. It is not while the sound is present, but in its absence that the space reveals itself. The poem traces that brief shift in perception—from hearing to seeing, from presence to absence—within seventeen Japanese sound units. Selected as one of 20 accepted haiku from 2,472 submissions in the 322nd Haiku Capital Matsuyama Haiku Post. A total of 23 haiku were selected: 3 special selections and 20 accepted haiku.
