Icebreaker Interview Questions That Are Actually Fun To Answer

Making conversation with strangers isn’t easy, whether you’re attending a networking event or interviewing a talent.

The thing is people always tell you where to meet other people. But no one ever showed you how to interview someone and create conversation.

To do that, you are going to need a much better line than asking how heavy a polar bear weighs (enough to break the ice. Get it?).

While interviewing others doesn’t come naturally to everyone (been there, done that), there are many ways to make it easier and less awkward for first-timers. The key is to find those great conversations and let the interest come naturally.

If you were to choose a tagline for your life, what would it be?

Some people call it a catchphrase motto or maybe an affirmation. But really they are personal taglines — a short and sweet sound bite that says what you do and why you do it.

The “why” part is where things get interesting. It distinguishes one person from another and sheds a bit of light on one’s personality. Fundamentally, your tagline states what you expect from yourself and what others will experience from being around you.

Do take note that a tagline is not just an elevation pitch (I’ve met my fair share of bourgeois people who will drop any fancy quotes just to impress another). It’s about getting a conversation started and going.

What’s the most valuable piece of career advice you’ve been given?

Of all the things we learn in school, how to build a successful career rarely comes up.

Throughout your life, you will always receive career advice — from a mentor, colleagues, friends or family. What you do with that piece of advice you received, good or bad, is entirely up to you.

But if you ask around, you'll find many nuggets of career wisdom from everyday people. After all, everyone at one point of time had to start from scratch and learn from the get-go, right?

Next time someone asks you, "Any advice to share?" don't give them a dry answer. It never hurts to give and get advice.

Out of all the seemingly weird random questions aforementioned, the question about one’s interview preparation is sure to top the charts! This is a classic question yet often overlooked. Plus, your talent’s answer will tell you a great deal about them.

Did they take the interview seriously? Did they research and picked up relevant information that can help them describe their experiences in a way that resonates with you, the interviewer?

Preparing for an interview means taking time to thoughtfully consider the relevancy a talent has to the position and company.

Remember that the interview is just as much about you finding a good fit for the role as it is about the talent finding a good fit for his/her own work environment.

Food for Thought

You might think that being interesting gives an upper hand when it comes to answering such questions. That isn’t necessarily true. All you have to do is ask the right questions to find someone interesting.
