Retired NBA star Wade as patron of transgender youth
Creating an Online Community to Help Transgender People Retired NBA star Dwyane Wade has become a strong supporter of transgender youth. According to the Associated Press on the 24th (Korea Standard Time), Wade will create an online community called Translatable after receiving an achievement award from the Elevate Prize Foundation, a non-profit organization that sponsors transgender youth in Miami Beach, Florida. Wade, who also announced plans to donate $250,000, said, "I hope this community will help adolescents grow and their mental health, and spark conversations leading to greater understanding and acceptance." Wade is a franchise star and NBA Hall of Fame member who has played for the Miami Heat for more than 14 years and wore a three-time champion ring, but moved to California in 2020 when a law was enacted to discriminate against transgender people in Florida. Wade's daughter, who turns 17 next week, revealed that she is transgender, which is also why she sponsored them. "We understand that in Florida, not everyone feels the same way as anyone else," Wade said, "as in most lives, you can understand more when you get to know them, and if you don't want to, you'll stay in ignorance." In the United States, more than 500 bills have been proposed to discriminate against transgender people. Alexander Locke, director of the Aliphoni Center, which helps transgender youth, said, "Not all bills are made into law, but they are hateful acts that affect our children in a very destructive way," adding, "If celebrities like Wade sponsor them, it will greatly help change the perception of transgender people."
