今年5月にナナメウエ初の社内翻訳者・通訳者として入社いただき、すでに様々な方面で活躍しているDentonさんにナナメウエに入社を決めた理由や、実際に働き感じていることを聞きました！

アメリカ出身/ From U.S.

2015年アメリカで大学を卒業後、日本（岐阜県で）に来日し、JETプログラムで3年間英語を教える。
その後、東京に移り、文部科学省の国費留学生度で翻訳におけるジェンダー表現に関する研究を始め、立教大学で異文化コミュニケーション学の修士課程を修了。
2022年3月に卒業し、5月からナナメウエ初の社内翻訳者・通訳者としてスキルを発揮しながら活躍中！

I graduated from university in the United States of America in 2015, then moved to Gifu, Japan to teach English on the JET Program for 3 years. After that I moved to Tokyo and began doing research on gender representation in translation under the MEXT Scholarship, which allowed me to complete my M.A. in Intercultural Communication at Rikkyo University in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Fortunately I graduated this past March 2022, and now I’m super excited to have made my way to nanameue to use my new skills as an inhouse translator and interpreter!

What made you want to join nanameue, Inc. as a translator/interpreter?

ナナメウエの求人内容を見たときSNSで人々のコミュニティ創りを大切にしている事業内容にとても引きつけられました。SNS 上で共通の趣味や日常的な出来事を通じ、人々が繋がり、絆を深められる場所の提供に挑戦しているといったメッセージはとても心に響くものでした。

私が翻訳家を目指す上で、ただ文書を翻訳したり、商談の通訳をしたりするだけでは足りないと思っていたんです。特に新型コロナの時代を経験したことで、誰かの日常生活を社会的、精神的に支え、且つオープンマインドな企業の架け橋になりたいと思っていました。ナナメウエは私が求めていた環境そのものでありますし、その期待以上に素晴らしいと感じています。

The job posting for nanameue really caught my eye compared to those of other companies because it was evident from the description that the company cared about community-building. Through its social media service, the company is trying to bring people together to bond over hobbies and everyday instances that we all share (whether amusing, mundane, or difficult), and this message really resonated with me. I didn’t want to just translate documents or interpret business meetings anywhere that would take me. I wanted to become a cultural link for an open-minded company that gives social and emotional support to their clients’ everyday lives, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, nanameue was the perfect fit, and it’s ended up being even more committed to these ideals than I had expected!

What are the people at nanameue, Inc. like?

これまでインターンシップ、アルバイト、正社員とさまざまな仕事を経験してきましたが、どんな仕事でも、場所でも、私にとって一番大切にしていることは一緒に働く仲間です。その面では、ナナメウエで働く人たちは本当に素晴らしい方たちばかりです。ナナメウエで働いている人たちは同僚としてだけでなく、本当の意味で話しやすい人たちばかりです。

チームメンバーは皆、一緒に仕事を取り組むことを純粋に楽しんでいますし、仕事上でなくても、お互いコミュニケーションをとるこが好きだと思います。オフィスでの言語は英語なので、英語を母国語とする私はもちろん安心して話をできますが、グローバルな共通言語を使いながらお互いを知ろうとする姿勢に、刺激を受けています。また、LGBTQI+コミュニティの一人として、日本の職場でこれほど歓迎され、感謝されていると感じたのは初めてでした。自分らしさを大切にする自由な社風は、活力となりますし、仕事への意欲を高めてくれています。

I’ve worked many different jobs in my life, from internships to part-time jobs to full-time jobs, and no matter what kind of job I do or where it is, the most important thing to me is the people I work with. With that, I’m extremely happy and thankful to say that the people at nanameue are just spectacular. Everyone is so easy to talk to, and not just in a neutrally-friendly-coworker way. The team members all seem genuinely interested in working with one another and communicating beyond just tasks and results. The office language is set as English, and as a native English speaker of course that makes me feel relaxed, but it also makes me feel inspired because we are all trying to get to know each other while using a global lingua franca. Also, as a member of the LGBTQI+ community, I have never felt so welcome and even appreciated in a workspace in Japan. I feel like we all encourage ourselves to be ourselves, so the free office culture really energizes me and enhances my work ethic in turn.

ナナメウエの翻訳家としてビジョンや個人的な目標、挑戦してみたいこと
What are your personal goals at nanameue, Inc.? What kinds of projects do you want to get involved with here？

ナナメウエでの目標は周りの人たちの仕事を楽にすること、プロダクト・サービスの翻訳における英語の基準を作ること、製品開発チームやマーケティングチームと密接に連携し、英語を通じて世界中のユーザーにYay! をより魅力的にすることを目指します。5月に入社をしてから既に財務とwebエンジニアリングの専門性の高いドキュメントの翻訳を経験しているので、こういった分野を引き続き学んでいきたいですね。特に、プロダクトや会社について興味を持ってもらうためプロジェクトの翻訳を今後はしていきたいです。会社の成長に貢献し、5年、10年後にYay! の英語版の質の向上を導いていたと言えるようになりたいですね。

My personal goals at nanameue are: to make everyone else’s job easier, to help create English standards for product/service translations, and to work closely with the Product Development and Marketing teams to make Yay! even more appealing for users all over the world through English. Since entering the company I’ve already translated documents that were very technical in both finance and web engineering, so I hope to continue to learn more about these fields. Specifically, I want to translate lots of projects that require piquing the interests of readers and making them curious about our products and company. I would love to play a role in the growth of our company, and to be able to look back in 5-10 years and say “I was on the team that helped redesign the English identity of Yay!”

Message to future employees at nanameue

日々新たなことや、特にソーシャルメディア、ウェブ開発、ファイナンスの3つの分野を学ぶことが好きな人はここで働くことを楽しめると思います。また柔軟な考えや自らプロジェクトを管理できる人も向いていると思います。好奇心や学ぶことに意欲的であれば、初めての仕事でもどんなことも楽しめるはずですし、「ナナメウエ」という言葉の通り、新しい方向性を追うことを大切にできる人がいいですね。

You will love working here if you want to learn about new topics every day, especially when it comes to the intersections of social media, web development, and finance. You will also fit in well if you are flexible and able to manage your own projects. Come with the right amounts of curiosity and willingness to learn, and you will be able to adapt to all sorts of tasks—even if the content is totally new to you! In the end, as the word itself suggests, “nanameue” is all about following new directions.
