ということで、今日は、2020年9月、システム部にエンジニアとして新卒入社された、シカさんについて詳しく聞いていきます〜！！

Hello! I'm Chihappy, the person in charge of developer relations.
I'll be doing it again this year, the 2021 New Graduate Interview!

So today, we're going to hear more about Shikha-san, who joined the Systems Department as a new graduate engineer in September 2020~!

シカさんについて（Shikha san’s Profile）

わたしは152センチの山頂です。
わたしの名前はヒンディー語で山頂という意味で、身長は152センチなので152センチの山頂ということになります。
生まれてからずっとインドで生活してきました。

わたしには姉と弟がいますが、姉とは特に仲が良く、わたしにとって2番目の母のような存在です！
父は現在コンビニエンスストアを経営していて、母は専業主婦をしています。
父は多くのビジネスに挑戦してきましたが、母は常に真の意味で父のパートナーであり続けました。このような両親の生き方は、わたしのキャリアにも少なくない影響を与えています。

また、本を読むのがすごく好きです！
家から出られなくても、本さえあればいろいろなところに行くことができます。
これはこのコロナ禍においても、とっても重要なことだと思います。

他には、バドミントン、自転車、ダンスなども好きです。
食べ物は、家で作った料理が何よりも好きで、文字通りこの世の天国だと思っています。

ちなみに好きな果物はグアバなので、もし何かプレゼントしてくださることがあれば、バスケットいっぱいのグアバをいただけたら、すごく喜びます！　
テディベアも大好きで家には5体のテディベアがいるのですが、そのうちの1体はなんと身長が約120センチもあります。笑

I’m a 5ft summit. My name means summit in Hindi and I’m 5 ft tall.
I’ve lived in India my whole life.

I have an older sister and a younger brother.
I’m very close with my sister, she’s like a second mother to me.

My father owns a convenience store and my mother is a housewife.
My father has experimented with a lot of businesses and my mother has always been his partner in a true sense, they’re my inspiration in my career.

I love reading books. Books can take you places when you can’t leave your house, which is so relevant during this pandemic.
I also love playing badminton, riding bicycles and dancing.

I love home cooked food more than anything, it’s literally heaven on earth.

My favorite fruit is Guava(if you ever want to gift me something, give me a basket of Guavas). I also love teddy bears, I have 5 teddy bears at home, one of them is 4 ft tall.

シカさんの故郷について教えてください（About her hometown）

わたしはAjmer（アジュメール）という、インドのRajasthan（ラージャスターン）州にある小さな町で育ちました。

タール砂漠の60％がラージャスターン州に位置しているため、夏は43度、冬は5度と非常に暑く、寒さも厳しいです。

大都市のように巨大なショッピングモールやメトロなどはありませんが、わたしの家族を含め、アジュメールに住む人たちはミニマリスト的考えをモットーに生活しています。

日々の生活で既製品を使用することもほとんどなく、今でもスパイスや小麦粉は自分たちで挽き、牛乳は酪農家から直接仕入れています。

親戚のほとんどはアジュメールに住んでいるので、イベントの度にミニパーティーみたいに盛り上がります！母がおいしい家庭料理を作ってくれて、わたしたちはダンスやクリケットをしたり、トランプやルドー、キャロムなどのボードゲームをして楽しみます。

My hometown is Ajmer. It is a small city in the state of Rajasthan.

60% of Thar desert is in Rajasthan, so it is super hot in summers (around 43 degrees) and super cold in winters(5 degrees).

There aren’t as many facilities here as you see in big cities like huge malls or metros. Minimalistic life is the motto of the residents including my family.

We still grind our spices and flour at home, we get our milk directly from a cow owner.

There are very few packaged goods that we use in our day to day life. Most of my relatives live in Ajmer, so whenever there is a festival it’s like a mini party every time. Our mothers cook delicious food, we dance and play games including cricket, ludo, cards, and carrom.

生まれ育ったふるさとを離れるのはどんな気持ちですか？（How does it feel to leave your home country?）

「大きな不安の中にこそ、最大のチャンスが隠れている（原文：In your greatest discomfort lies the greatest opportunities）」という素敵な言葉があるんです。

もちろん自分の国や居心地の良い場所を離れるのはすごく怖いですが、日本でのお仕事はきっと素晴らしい経験になるだろうと思います。

家族や友人ともすぐに会えなくなるので寂しいけど・・・なんとか生き延びていくつもりです！！

I’m a firm believer of the saying “In your greatest discomfort lies the greatest opportunities”. I know I’m really scared of leaving my country and comfort, but I know it is going to be a great learning experience. I’m going to miss my family and friends, but I’ll survive.

どんな学生時代を過ごしたのか教えてください（About her school days）

わたしの学生時代はすごく勉強熱心だったので、高校を卒業するまでずっと、他の誰よりも早く登校していました。

授業も基本的には全部好きでしたが、誰かの戦いの記録に意味があるとはどうしても思えなかったので、社会はあまり好きではありませんでした。
歴史をただ覚えるより、そのような問題が起こった大元の原因や、どうすれば争いを回避して平和な世の中にできるのかを考える方が、ずっと興味があります。

逆に数学が大好きだったので、11年生（※日本で言う高校生のようなもの）からは科学を専攻しました。ちなみに、宿題は家族みんなが昼寝をしている間に終わらせるのがわたしのルーティンです（わたしは昼寝があまり好きではありません）。

また、子供の頃から整理整頓が好きで、夜になるとバッグや制服、靴などを整理して、時間通りに学校に到着できるようにしていました。

このようにすごく真面目だったので、私は先生のお気に入りで、学校ではとても有名だったと思います。

IIT（インド工科大学）の受験に関しては、一年間にわたって準備をしました。
その一年間は学校の授業が終わるとすぐに塾に行って6時間勉強し、家に帰ったら夕食を食べて寝るだけ・・・という、とても「生活」とは呼べないような生活を送っていましたが、実は結構楽しかったです。

苦労してようやく問題が解けたときは、言葉では言い表せないほどの達成感がありました。

「テストで点数が取れなくてもどうか落ち込まないで。大学生活を思いっきり楽しんでくれ」IIT Goaへの入学が決まった時、父にそう言われました。

その言葉の通り、大学時代は勉強もしっかりしつつ、人間的に成長することを目標に頑張りました。

英語が苦手だったせいでコミュニケーションをうまく取れなかったため、なんとかしようと思っていたところ読書に出会い、それから本が大好きになりました！
ピーク時には一日一冊のペースで読んでいました。

色々ありましたが、すごく楽しい大学生活を過ごせたと思います。

I was a nerd at my school, I’ve always come first in my class till 12th standard.

I loved all subjects except social studies which included history, political science, geography and economics.

It didn’t make sense for me to remember who killed who and when.

I was more interested in the root cause of it and how we can eradicate it to bring peace in the world.

I was passionate about mathematics and that’s why I chose science stream in my 11 standard. I don’t like taking naps in the afternoon, so I always used to finish my homework when my siblings and parents naped.

I have been an organized person since my childhood days, I used to arrange my bag, uniform and shoes at night, so that I could reach my school on time.

I was a teacher’s favourite and very famous in my school.

In India, you need to pass two exams to get admission into IITs, so for one year I prepared for it.

In that one year, I literally stopped living, I used to spend 6 hours in my coaching centre studying after my classes, I used to go home at around 7 o’clock to just have my dinner and sleep. My classes used to start at 8 am and finish at 1 pm.

This one year was a lot of fun, when you finally solve a question after a lot of struggle, it is rewarding beyond words.

The results came and I got admission into IIT Goa.

When I reached college I remember my dad saying to me “Please don’t cry if you get less marks in tests, we won’t be there to console you, just enjoy your time here” and I took his advice, I did study enough to get decent grades, but my main focus was to grow as a person, and I was very shy to speak to people because of my poor English skills, so I decided to work on it, that’s when I found book reading and fell in love with reading.

I used to finish one book a day when I was on my peak. Overall I loved my college.

どうして就職先に日本を選んだのですか？（Why did you decide to work in Japan?）

元々いつか海外で仕事をしてみたいと思っていましたが、まさか新卒から海外で働くことになるとは思ってもみませんでした！

最終的な決断は、友人たちの後押しがあってこそだと思います。

友人たちはアニメをよく見ていたので、私が日本で働くことを私以上に喜んでくれましたし、「きっと日本の文化はシカに合うと思うよ」と励ましてくれました。

I always wanted to go abroad for work after a couple of years, but I didn’t expect to land a foreign job at the beginning of my career.

My friends played a very important role in this decision. They were the ones who encouraged me to go through with it. They watch a lot of anime and more than me they were excited that I’m going to work in Japan. They knew that I would fit in the culture well.

日本に来たらどんなことがしてみたいですか？（What she wants to do in Japan）

東京スカイツリーに行ったり、富士山に登ったり・・・春は桜を見に行ったりもしてみたいです。自分のことは自分で管理して、自立した生活を送りたいなと思っています。

I want to visit the Tokyo Sky Tree, I want to see cherry blossoms. I also want to go on a trek on fuji-san. I’m looking forward to an independant life. I really want to take care of everything by myself and manage my finances.

会社を選ぶときの基準を教えてください（What is important to her in choosing a company）

会社を選ぶときに重視したポイントは3つです。

①職場の環境と価値観（ミッションやバリューなど）

1日のうちの約3割をオフィスで過ごすことになるので、オフィス環境は健康な生活を維持する役割を担っていると思っています。
もしもあまり良くない環境で働いていたら、きっと心身共に悪影響を受けてしまうでしょう。
また、社長のお話を聞いたとき、ミッションやバリューに共感できたので、是非この会社で働きたいと感じました。

②仕事で求められるスキル

自分のスキルが、仕事で求められているものと一致していなければ、生産効率が下がってしまいます。

③お給料

「物質主義」的に聞こえてしまうかもしれませんが、十分なお給料をもらっていると思えなければ仕事に100％コミットすることはできないと思います。

逆に、自分の待遇に満足できていれば気持ちよく働けますし、更に向上心を持って仕事に取り組むことができます。

There are a few points that I consider important when choosing a company :

1. Company’s work environment and values : You spend 33% of your day in your office and it plays an important role in your overall health. If you work in a toxic environment, it is going to affect your mental health and in turn your physical health too. When I talked to shin-san, I knew I wanted to work for this company.
2. Job requirements : If your skills are not aligned with what is expected of you in the job, then your efficiency will reduce.
3. Money : It might sound a bit materialistic on my part, but if you don’t think you’re getting paid enough, you’ll never be able to give your 100% to work. When you’re satisfied with your salary, it’s the best feeling in the world, you’ll work hard to get a raise and at the same time you’ll feel satisfied with where you are at the moment.

どうやってGMOリサーチを知りましたか？（How did she know GMO Research?）

大学から紹介されました。

社長と面接をした時、彼の大切にしている価値観について聞くと「お互いへのリスペクトを欠かさず、対等であること」と答えてくれたのを覚えています。
この回答を聞いて、私はこの会社で働きたいと強く思いました。

I was introduced to GMO Research by my University during my campus placement. I had an interview with shin-san and I remember asking him about the values he believed in. He said respect and equality and I just knew that I belonged in this company.

今後どのように成長していきたいですか？（How do you want to grow in the future?）

日本語をもっと勉強して、グローバルチームに貢献していきたいです。
決して学ぶことを辞めず、常に気持ちは学生であり続けるつもりです。

I want to become proficient in Japanese and contribute to the Global team. I never want to stop learning, I always want to remain a student.

最後になにかひとことお願いします！（One last thing,please）

私の友人はいつも「シカは聞き上手だし、アドバイスもとても参考になる」と言ってくれます。
なので、もし何か私に聞いて欲しいことがあればいつでも歓迎します(^o^)

また、先ほどお話しした通りすごく小さな町で生まれ育ったため、あまり料理の種類に詳しくありません。もし私と食事に出かけることがあれば、メニューの説明などで手助けしてくれたらすごく嬉しいです・・・！

My friends always say that I give great advice and I’m very good at listening, so if you ever need someone to listen to you you’re always welcome.

As I mentioned before my city is really small so I haven’t tried a lot of dishes, so if we ever go out for dinner or something, please help me with the menu :)
