はじまっちゃったなぁ…10月1日、イスラエルによる度重なる挑発行為に耐えきれず、いよいよイランによるイスラエルへの弾道ミサイル攻撃が始まった。新しい中東戦争の戦端が開かれたと思う。

50年前に中東戦争が起きたときには日本の物価は20%以上あがり（第一次オイルショック時＝1974年）、ガソリンなどの石油製品だけじゃなくトイレットペーパーまでもが市中から消えた。ウォシュレットが誕生したのが5年後の1980年6月だ。拭く方法がなくなった当時の阿鼻叫喚は想像に難くない。

オイルショックのとき日本の中東への石油依存度は高く、なんと80%を超えていた。その反省から原子力の活用や、石油資源輸入先の多角化（ロシアなど）など、日本はエネルギー確保のリスク分散進めてきた。で、今はどれぐらい石油を中東に依存しているか調べてみると「94%（2022年）」である…えっ？

そうなんです。東日本大震災の原子力事故とウクライナとロシアの戦争で、実は逆に中東へのエネルギー依存度は上がっちゃっているのよ、日本。うーん、これはまずい。ウォシュレットがあるからトイレは大丈夫として、大きなチャンスが訪れようとしている日本経済に冷水をかけられるのが心配だ。

半導体工場やAIを動かすためのデータセンターの設備投資がいま、日本全土で加速している。ところが半導体工場やAIデータセンターはとても大きな電力を必要とする。石油が届かなくなったり、石油価格が上がる高インフレが発生すると良質で安価な電気を提供することが叶わなくなる。そうなるとこれらの設備投資は日本以外の国に逃げていってしまう。

遠い世界の出来事ではない。中東戦争は私たちのトイレ、私たちの給料に直結する問題なのだ。戦争なんてほんと要らないわぁ…。

It’s started... On October 1st, after enduring repeated provocations from Israel, Iran finally launched ballistic missile attacks on Israel. I believe a new Middle Eastern war has now begun.

When the Middle Eastern war broke out 50 years ago, Japan’s prices surged by over 20% (during the first oil shock in 1974). Not only gasoline and other petroleum products, but even toilet paper vanished from the shelves. The Washlet was invented five years later, in June 1980. It's hard to imagine the chaos back then when people ran out of ways to wipe.

During the oil shock, Japan was heavily dependent on Middle Eastern oil, with over 80% of its supply coming from the region. In response, Japan took measures to diversify energy sources, such as utilizing nuclear power and importing oil from Russia and other countries. So, I looked into how much oil Japan currently relies on from the Middle East... and it's 94% (as of 2022)! Wait, what?

Yes, that's right. Due to the nuclear disaster caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the war between Ukraine and Russia, Japan's dependence on Middle Eastern energy has actually increased. This is a serious issue. While toilets may be fine thanks to the Washlet, I'm worried that this looming crisis could throw cold water on the significant opportunities awaiting the Japanese economy.

At the moment, investments in semiconductor factories and data centers to power AI are accelerating nationwide in Japan. However, these facilities require enormous amounts of electricity. If oil supplies are disrupted or high inflation drives up oil prices, Japan won't be able to provide high-quality, affordable electricity. As a result, these investments might shift to other countries outside Japan.

This isn’t something happening far away—it’s directly tied to our toilets and even our paychecks. War, really, is something we just don't need...
