I oversaw the Higher Level English department and ran classes. The center used the Kumon Method of Learning which cultivates discipline through self-learning and promotes goal setting and accomplishment. Through working here, I’ve become diligent, a multi-tasker, and responsible. I also learned how to see the potential in people and work with them to realize it themselves. I also learned to be professional and handle myself accordingly when talking to parents.
My job included:
- Recognizing the potential in each student and working alongside them to bring it to fruition - Help develop good educational habits in the students that maximizes their potential - Instill a love for words and stories in children - Running classrooms with immediate feedback to students. Majority of the grading had to be done for each child while he/she was still in class. At the same time, I was required to answer any questions other students had, keep track of in and out times for each student, and keep a conducive atmosphere in the classroom. This has helped me become a fast and smart worker, able to multi-task and handle pressure. - Graph each student’s progress, ensuring they will meet their goals for the month/year - Hold parent-teacher meetings to discuss student’s progress - Facilitate reading activities with students to build their love for reading. This includes finding creative activities in relation to the assigned book that the students would want to engage in
- Lee Review is a literary magazine published at Lee University. Prior to working here, 2 of my poems were published in separate issues. Through being a part of this magazine, I was given the opportunity to be a part of the different stages a publishing company goes through before producing its magazine. I learned how to look for quality works that fell in line with the magazine’s values. I also learned the value of publicity and how important it is for a company’s success. My job included: - Creating call-to-submission fliers to email to other schools and to put up around campus in order to spread the word - Emailing various schools and liaising with them to be a part of the magazine’s literary competition - Reading each submission and deciding with a group which pieces worked well with our magazine and which didn’t
The Associate Professor I worked for is also a Playwright. During my 2 semesters working for her, she was in the process of writing a commissioned play. Through working as her Student Assistant, I learned that I like helping others make their lives easier. I also learned a lot about a Playwright’s process and how to do efficient and thorough research. Being organized, efficient, and aware of other people’s needs are some of the skills I gained through working for this professor. My job included: - Researching for the play and creating easily readable documents with pictures and notes - Attending rehearsals where my tasks were to take useful August 2017 - May 2018 notes that could help with the process, printing scripts for the actors and being as helpful as possible - Running errands such as returning books to the library, picking up her dramaturg from the airport, and making calls to hotels or restaurants to find out information relevant to her needs - Taking attendance and exporting them to a spreadsheet on Microsoft Excel - Creating quizzes and mini-tests for her classes p - Grading quizzes and tests and uploading the grades onto the university’s database (Moodle platform) - Keeping her office space clean and tidy
