Komaba Times (University Newsletter)
Started and managed an English student letter called "Komaba Times" in a predominantly Japanese university, with the particular aim to foster an environment for foreign voices to thrive. My team and I were able to cultivate a following of almost 400 new subscribers by using social media platforms to advertise the paper (e.g. making an official Facebook page). One aspect that we valued in our university newsletter “Komaba Times” was the reader’s opinions. Using our Facebook page and Twitter, we would reach out to our readers about content they wanted to see in the newsletter and to gather stories/poems/photos from them. By engaging with our audience, we sought to create a newsletter that accurately represented the foreign voices in our university that are often muted in the backdrop of the overwhelmingly Japanese student population. One popular segment in our paper was the community cooking section where we got our readers to submit their recipes for easy, low-budget college meals.
