Why Job Search Is Like Travelling, And A Marketing Manager’s Trip with Wantedly

The words “job search” or “hiring” can be quite a daunting term for every job seeker or employer looking to fill a role. If I could hear the collective groans of hiring managers and job candidates right now, I’m sure it’ll be deafening 🙉😜

Job-seeking is much like travelling; we’re investing significant time and resources into what we hope would be a fruitful or even life-changing experience. Though unlike travelling, having uncertainties about a prospective job isn’t as idyllic as exploring a small town off the beaten European path with no wifi. We want to be reassured that this role at this certain company is what we’re looking for, which in turn allows us to perform optimally. Especially for us Millennials, learning all about a company’s culture, goals and values before taking on a role is increasingly taking precedence.

If only there was a place where our job-seeking woes can be laid to rest - a haven like Changi Airport but for job seekers 🤔 Oh wait, there is! Serena Lee seems to have found the answer. Her saving grace isn’t quite Changi Airport, but it made for a pleasant job seeking experience. And the best part is ... it’s right here and you’re already on it!

I caught up with the Marketing Manager at Payboy, a leading homegrown HR management software provider, at their Blk 71 home within Singapore’s very own “Silicon Valley”. And just in time for the second part of Wantedly’s miniseries ‘Reboot, Refresh, Recharge’ where we interview successful hires through Wantedly to find out their resolutions for 2019 and catch a glimpse of them in action in their newfound roles! Between the Payboy team’s post-lunch foosball matches and gaming huddles, I sat down with Serena to learn more about her hiring experience on Wantedly and her life at Payboy.

(Psst… there’s $500 in cash up for grabs! Read on to find out how you could win.)

Question: Could you tell us about your Wantedly journey and your experience on the platform?Serena: My Wantedly journey has been quite pleasant and efficient. It’s really good that you can actually find out what it’s really like in a company … the environment –before you actually go for the interview– by chatting with your potential employers via the app. The app is user-friendly and overall, this speeds up the hiring process. Likewise for employers, it’s also good because you can find out more about the candidate before asking them down for an interview.

Question: What made you join Payboy?
: Basically I’m a very hands-on person, so what I was looking out for is a startup. When I chanced upon this role on Wantedly, I knew this was what I was looking out for and by coming for the interview, my choice was affirmed with the easy-going environment that I saw.

Here’s a sneak peek into a day in Serena’s life as Marketing Manager at Payboy:

As the new year dawns, Serena’s resolution for 2019 was short but sure. “It’s for both Payboy and me to strive for greater heights”. Wrapping up our short interview, Serena also had a piece of advice to share with job seekers: Go for your dreams and don’t give up even if you face any rejections.
