What does it feel like to work at Trim, the Japanese start-up?

Hello! My name is Lisa and before telling you about Trim, please let me say a few words about me.

I am from Bucharest, Romania and I am pursuing a bachelor degree at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and I came to Japan as an exchange student. I am currently enrolled in a one-year exchange program at Keio University.

Apart from the exclusive experiences offered by Japan, that any foreigner visiting Japan could have, I was lucky enough to get even more: an internship at Trim and become part of a great team!

This way, not only that I was given the amazing chance to be part of a Japanese company, but I have been able to enjoy every minute of it and start loving to work in Japan.

Basically, what does Trim do?

Trim is committed to creating a world where mothers find it easier to take care of their babies when they go outside the house by building ‘mamaro’, the nursing room and the ‘Baby Map’ app.

Trim designs, assembles, delivers and creates strategies that reduce mother’s stress and reduce the burden on women. As mothers may have doubts about breastfeeding or how to change their kid’s diaper in public, it becomes a very time intensive and also stress intensive task, requiring a lot of planning and attention.

Trim takes care of every step, from providing ‘mamaro’, the nursing room that can be easily installed everywhere, to guiding the mothers in finding the facility, via the ‘Baby Map’ app.

What made me want to do an internship at Trim?

I found out about Trim thanks to a friend of mine living in Japan. Before coming to Japan, I had heard about the hardships mothers in Japan encounter and the stress they have to face everyday. The fact that Trim’s is not simply a business unit, but it has an important reason for being, by bringing a contribution to the future and to the society, made me decide to apply for an intern position and I was very happy to hear that I got in!

Basically, what is it really like inside Trim?

Before starting my job as an intern, I was a bit afraid that I might not suit the company’s culture, as each country has a work environment that may differ from others. And I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised to discover an organizational culture that not only made me feel confortable, but it also made me feel welcome, at ease in any situation and always appreciated. Being a foreigner in Japan may not be easy sometimes, as the language barrier puts a challenge; however, at Trim everyone understands English, so even if you don’t have any knowledge of Japanese, you can still easily communicate with the other members, which makes it an incredible foreigner- friendly environment.

Hence, what’s beautiful about Trim, apart from its mission, is its company culture. Carrying out your tasks, while relaxing music plays in the background looks like an ideal place to be and a place any employee would ask for. This approach creates a fun, transparent, friendly environment and it is very diverse, since it employs people from different backgrounds, with various perspectives and ideas. It is also hardworking and highly productive!

Why is it fun?

The company encourages teamwork and there are many activities taking place on different occasions, which makes the company look like a big family.

Trim remembers its employees’ birthdays and we celebrate together!

On Valentine’s Day, the boys received chocolate from the girls!

And we also eat together at lunch!

Everyone respects each other and any idea is highly valued!

Trim’s office has a stunning view, enjoying an exceptional location in an office building in Yokohama!

Finally, the workplace is very spacious and open, providing a warm and positive attitude!

Interning at Trim has been a valuable experience for me, as with the help offered by the kind team-members, I have been professionally growing, by tackling new challenges everyday, learning a lot of new things and it has motivated me to be constantly developing. Always surrounded by talented and dedicated people, you get inspired and desire to achieve more, to bring a contribution to the society and lastly, you feel valued and always cherished.
