Life as a Developer #1: Mark

Hey there!

Its probably been a while since you've last heard from us, but we wanted to do something a little different this time. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be sharing more content related to learning how to code, as well as shedding light on the industry for those who might be considering venturing into it.

Oh Hi Mark!

Join us as we find out from Mark about his experience and life going from working as an auditor, undergoing the course, and then finding his place working at H2i Singapore as a full stack developer.

In conversation with Mark:

What did you do before joining the course and what were some of the considerations you had before joining the programme?

Mark: I was an auditor in an accounting firm, and I worked there for about 2 years. Life there was pretty intense and stressful, leading me to want to try something different. For me, technology was always something that sparked my interest in wanting to understand how it works, having been an avid consumer of digital entertainment. At that point, I also felt like I wanted to do something tangible and give back to society as well as creating something meaningful. Before finding this program, I had a few practical factors to consider, such as the work environment and availability flexible working hours. But ultimately, I wanted a job that allowed work to be a part of my life rather than consume my life. Choosing to switch to the tech industry was then a natural choice given the greater inclination for most companies to prioritize a work-life balance rather than just profits for the company.

How did you find the course and what did you learn about coding overall?

Mark: The course was pretty challenging as there were many things to learn and understand. Personally coding feels like I'm learning a new language that is constantly evolving and adapting everyday, it is never static. But nonetheless with practice, everything became more manageable as I progressed and developed my understanding of how it all worked.

What are you looking to do now that you've graduated from the program?

Mark: Currently I'm already working in a software application development role at H2i Singapore, where I am hoping to learn how to design and create apps and APIs from scratch. The end goal is to hopefully land a high paying job as there are plenty of opportunities and and a lack of proficient software developers and software engineers in the market.
