カラフル・ボード社員インタビュー vol.3 は、リード UX/UI デザイナーの Jun さん。 事業戦略上の重要なプロダクトをいくつも手がけ、その成果物は常に期待値を上回る。 ハーフで、英語と日本語のバイリンガル。 ※インタビューアーはCTO武部

−ではまず、年齢と、結婚しているかどうか教えてください！

Age 27, unmarried, no kids. 年齢は27歳です。結婚してないです。子供もいません。

−趣味はありますか？

I really enjoy using the internet to explore and discover things that I don't know before. For example, I like reading answers on a Q&A website like Quora. It has a great community and you can find many great answers on about any question you can think of and the best answers usually gets the most votes. I like to watch short videos on Philosophy and Psychology on a youtube channel called "The School of Life". I enjoy listening to music from time to time.

趣味というか、時間がある時は自分の知識欲を満たすためにネットを見ています。例えば、Quoraの色々なQ&Aを見て勉強したり、YouTubeの"The School of Life"の哲学や心理学に関する短い動画を見ています。他には、音楽を聴くとかです。 趣味がデザインとテクノロジーなので、仕事が趣味みたいな感じです。

−これで、入社してどれぐらい経ちますか？

Almost 1 year from today. I started in December 2015.

約1年前に入社しました。2015年の12月です。

−今のご自身の担当を教えてください。

Right now, I'm handling the UX/UI Design work on 4 of our active projects both B2B and B2C services. Some involves in designing a digital fashion closet web apps and some in AI Chat Bot services. I have a wide range of responsibilities from user research, product research, information architecture, assisting user interview, wire-framing and designing high fidelity UI mock up, building interactive prototypes. On the side, I'm designing and building promotion websites for those services.

今は4つのプロジェクトで、UI/UX デザイン を担当してます。プロダクトのリサーチやユーザーリサーチ、インフォメーションアーキテクチャー(IA)、ワイヤーフレーム作成、プロトタイプ作成などです。最近は新サービスのプロモーション用ティザーWebサイトも制作しています。

経験のない自分に、可能性を見い出し、懸けてくれた

−なぜカラフル・ボードへの入社を決めたのですか？

Two things: The people and their vision of AI. The people were not only really smart, they're friendly and passionate. But what struck me the most, was how the company were willing to take risk and make a bet to hire someone who has no prior design experiences like myself. This sense of optimism, forward thinking and risk taking is very rare in Japanese companies. This convinced me that we can adapt and be optimistic about the future. No matter how hard it is to achieve our goal to bring positive impact through AI for the rest of humanity.

2つあって、働く人達について、それと、AIに関するビジョンについてです。 1つ目は入社前に話した社員の方々の「温かさ」です。 実は入社するまでデザインの経験は無いに等しいものでした。それなのに経験よりも僕の内面を理解し、評価してくれた。このリスクテイクの姿勢は日本企業では稀だと思います。 もう一つは会社のビジョンです。AIで世界の人々を幸せに、より豊かに、という考えはとても共感が持てました。

−カラフル・ボードの好きなところをズバリ三つ。

Three things I like about Colorful-Board: 1. People are smart and open minded 2. Friendly and optimistic culture 3. Provides freedom and lots of room to grow

1つ目はオープンマインドで優秀な人がたくさんいること。 2つ目は、フラットで風通しの良い環境なので働きやすいこと。 3つ目は、自分の成長のために必要な自由とチャンスがあることです。

−入社後にあった、辛かったことや困ったこと、ありますか？

As a half Indonesian and half Japanese. I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and graduated from a university in Melbourne, Australia. Japanese is my third language. Naturally, office meetings, complex written communications and understanding presentations can be challenging. But what makes me sad is when I found myself unable to express my thoughts and ideas as much as I am capable of in English. Luckily, everyone in the company were very understanding and patient to understand my intention. I feel very lucky and always thankful for their support.

あまりないです。 あるとすれば、日本語の課題です。というのも自分のバックグラウンドがちょっと複雑で、インドネシアのジャカルタで生まれ、少しの間日本で過ごし、オーストラリアの大学を卒業しています。なので、日本語は僕の中で第三言語になります。社内外でのプレゼンなどを理解するのは難しいです。ですが、カラフル・ボードのみんなは僕にわかるように説明し直してくれるので、とてもありがたいです。

−入社してから最も達成感を感じたことは？

In just less than one year, I was able to be involved with more than 6 major design projects. As an inexperienced designer I was given the full trust and freedom to study each problem and to come up with a set of UX/UI solution that I think is best for our user who will use the service. Not every solutions are correct, and I was making a lot of mistakes and failures fast. But it is those mistakes and failures that is exactly what I needed in order to learn. It has become the foundation of what made me confident as a UX/UI Designer today.

今はまだ、達成感と言えるものは十分ではありません。 経験がないところからいろいろなプロジェクトに携わることができ、僕を信頼して自由に任せてもらえて、トライアンドエラーを繰り返しながらUI/UXデザイナーとしての自信を付けてきました。 なので、今抱えているプロジェクトが完成したら、達成感はあると思っています！

仲が良くて、明るくて楽しくて。でも真剣。そんなチームです

−所属チームはどんな雰囲気ですか？

The atmosphere in my team is really friendly, happy and cooperative. We communicate often about what we are working on, our hobbies, our personal lives and sometimes we argue to decide what is right for our customer, but that is because we really cared about doing the right thing for our customers and genuinely wanted to make the best product.

とても良い雰囲気のチームだと思います。プライベートな話もできるし、仕事の話もできる。とにかく仲が良くて、明るいし楽しい。 しかしそれぞれがプロダクトに対する思いが強く、たまに意見がぶつかる事もあります。そんな時は真剣に話し合えて、より良いサービスを作るために協力できる。というのは素晴らしいと思います。

−半年後の自分はどうなっていると思う？

Half year ago we were doing many different things and busy trying to make the best products for our prospective user. We had many discussions and stumbled on many great ideas and decided to take our chances to make it a reality. Six months from now, I think we will be flooded with results both good and bad and I am hoping that six months from now we will learn from the feedback from our users and focus on improving the ideas that work and move on from the ideas that doesn't. We need to keep adapting and adjusting ourselves to the results of what we did.

半年前、将来のユーザーのための最高のプロダクトを作るために、様々な異なる考えを試していました。多くの議論を通じて、多くのすごいアイデアを見つけ、チャンスがあるという意志決定をしました。 今から6ヶ月後には、いい結果も悪い結果も出てくると思います。ユーザーからのフィードバックを得て、改善します。私達は、私達が取った選択を、ユーザーに適合させるために最適化を続けてゆく必要があります。

−5年後の自分はどうなっていたい？

In 5 years time, the scale our company and our design team will be much bigger than it is now. By then, I hope to take on a much wider range of responsibilities and not restrict myself only in hands-on design. Right now, we are executing on strategies defined by the top stakeholder of the company, though I wish to be more involved in the strategy building process as well.

On the other hand, I am excited and looking forward on how AI will develop over time. How it impact my current role as designer, or how it may impact others job in general. If the role of design is still the same in 5 years time, I wanted to dedicate myself to be pursuing in that direction.

5年後は会社がもっと大きくなっていて、デザインチームも大きくなっていると思うので、デザインワークに限らない、広い範囲の責任を担えたらと思っています。今はトップから戦略を受け取った後にデザインを作っていますが、戦略の部分から関われたらと思っています。 また、AIがどう進むか、変わっていくかが非常に楽しみです。自分の仕事だったり、他の仕事もだけどかなりの変化が起きると思うので、5年後にもデザインできる仕事があるとすれば、その道を突き進んでいきたいです。

最後に ─ 求めるメンバーと、CEOの人柄について

−これから先、どんな人と一緒に働きたい？

I hope to work with people from different backgrounds who are optimistic about the future, who are risk takers, who have so much that I can learn from and most importantly who has the courage to do the right thing and know where they wanted to go in their lives.

僕もそうなので、ユニークなバックグラウンドを持っている人がいいです。失敗を恐れずに、時には勇気を持ってリスクを取れる人だったり、未来に対してポジティブな人がいいです。あとは技術的にも人間的にも学べる人だと嬉しいです。

−Junから見た渡辺さんは、どんな人？

Watanabe-san is definitely the most humble and optimistic CEO I've ever met. He has built this unique culture where you don't need to be intimidating even if you're smart. He has deep understanding of how business and technology works together. Has lots of interesting ideas to bring to the table for engineers and designers. He gives full autonomy and trust to his people. Sometimes he moves so fast that some of us are having trouble keeping up with schedules, but I think it's a great thing. It allow us to focus at what we do best as designers and engineers, make great products. Someone who stands at the top of an organization has to ensure that we are heading in the right direction, solving the right problem and constantly remind us of our vision. So I hope to learn more from his leadership and see what other innovation that we will do together in this company.

渡辺さんはとても謙虚で、クリエイティブな人だと思います。渡辺さんのリーダーシップからは多くを学んでいます。 また、ビジネスとテクノロジーの両方に精通しているので、多彩なプロジェクトが生まれ、アイデアもどんどん出てくる。アイデアが多すぎて、時々はエンジニアの方々が大変そうですね（笑）。 私達を信頼して任せてくれているので、デザイナーやエンジニアとして最善を尽くし、優れた製品を作ることができています。 組織のトップは、適切な方向に向かい、適切な問題を解決し、常に私たちのビジョンを思い出させなければならないと思いいます。私は彼のリーダーシップからもっと学び、この会社でこれから一緒にやってゆくイノベーションに関わっていきたいと思っています。
