“AI for sustainable innovation”を掲げているRecursiveでは、さまざまなバックグラウンドを持ったメンバーが次々と入社しています。

今回はそんなRecursiveのことや、メンバーのことを少しでも知ってもらえればと思い、Machine Learning Engineerとして活躍中のMariana Makiuchiにインタビューをしてきました。

ブラジル・日本で優秀成績を納めた彼女が、なぜRecursiveに入社したのか。ぜひ、最後まで読んでいただけると幸いです。

新卒でRecursiveに入社するまで。日本の大学で人工知能の修士号を獲得

ーーこれまでのキャリアについて教えてください。

私が人工知能に興味を持ったのは、ブラジリア大学の学部2年生のときです。専攻はメカトロニクス工学（ロボティクスに近い分野）でしたが、2年次から卒業まで、複数の奨学金を得て人工知能の研究も行っていました。学部生時代には国内の学会で1本、国際学会で2本の論文を発表しています。
学部3年のときに、1年間の留学のために初めて日本に来ました。ブラジル政府から全額資金援助を受けての留学でしたが、日本での生活と研究の経験がとても楽しかったので、日本での修士号の取得に挑戦することにしました。
ブラジリア大学を優秀成績で卒業した後、すぐに日本に渡り、東京工業大学大学院の修士課程で人工知能を専攻することになりました。
在ブラジル日本国大使館の推薦により、文部科学省の奨学金を得て、東京工業大学大学院で勉強することができました。日本政府が与えてくれたこの機会には、一生感謝すると思います。
東京工業大学では、ディープラーニングを用いた音声・言語からの感情認識に関する研究を行い、2本の論文と1冊の学術誌を発行しました。
東京工業大学で人工知能の修士号を取得した後に、Recursiveに入社しています。

ブラジル生活での関心ごとと、自分のできる仕事がマッチした

ーーなぜRecursiveに入社したのですか？

ブラジルに住んでいたため、常に社会問題や環境問題にさらされていました。これらの問題は私の関心事となっています。学生時代には、これらの問題の解決に取り組む機会はありませんでしたが、常に頭の片隅にありました。
Recursiveの機械学習エンジニアの求人票を見たとき、「これは応募しなければ」と思ったんです。Recursiveで働くことで、学部や大学院で得た知識を応用しながら、これまで気になっていた問題を解決することができるので、私にとって最適な仕事だと思っています。

上下関係を気にせず、自由に発言できる環境

ーー入社後、Recursiveについてどのような印象を持ちましたか？

まず、Recursiveのみんなは優しくて頭がいいということでした。チームのみんなが親切に、そして素直に接していることに気づいたときは、非常に驚きました。
また、上下関係を気にせず、自分の意見を自由に発言できること、そしてチーム内の他の人たちが、お互いの提案に耳を傾け、受け入れてくれることにも驚きました。
チームのみんなが持っている成長するマインドがとても楽しく、自分もたくさん成長し、学んできました。チームメンバーは、これからもお互いにうまくいったことを祝うと同時に、困難を克服するために助け合うでしょう。

ーーどんな人がRecursiveに向いていると思いますか？

常に変化するシナリオに対応できる人、コンフォートゾーンから飛び出してチャレンジする人、自分の考えや行動を明確に伝え、記録できる人、そして学習意欲のある人です。これは、エンジニアだけでなく、私たちのチームに参加したいすべての人に言えることだと思います。

--Tell me about your career so far.

My interest in artificial intelligence started during my second year as an undergraduate student in the University of Brasilia. My major was Mechatronics Engineering (similar to Robotics), and, from my second year until my graduation, I was also doing research in artificial intelligence, funded by multiple scholarships. I published one paper in a domestic conference and two papers in international conferences as an undergraduate student.
In my third year as an undergraduate student, I came to Japan for the first time to study abroad for one year. My studies were fully funded by the Brazilian government, and I enjoyed the experience of living and researching in Japan so much that I decided that I would challenge myself to obtain my Master’s degree in Japan.
I graduated from the University of Brasilia with honors, and right after that I moved to Japan to start my studies in the major of Artificial Intelligence at Tokyo Institute of Technology as a Master student.
My Master studies in Tokyo Institute of Technology were fully funded by the MEXT scholarship, which was granted to me based on a recommendation from the Embassy of Japan in Brazil. I will be forever grateful for this opportunity given by the Japanese government.
As part of my studies in Tokyo Institute of Technology, I conducted research in emotion recognition from speech and language using deep learning, and I published two papers and one journal.
Right after obtaining my Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, I started working at Recursive.

--Why did you join Recursive?

Living in Brazil, I have always been exposed to social and environmental problems, and these problems have become a concern of mine. As a student, I did not have much opportunity to work on the solution of these problems, but they have always been in the back of my mind. When I saw the job post for the machine learning engineer position in Recursive, I knew that I had to apply. Working as a machine learning engineer in Recursive would be the perfect job for me, because it would allow me to apply the knowledge that I obtained in my undergraduate and graduate courses to solve the problems that I have been concerned about.

--What was your impression about Recursive after you joined?

My first impression was that everyone in Recursive is kind and smart. I was positively surprised when I noticed that everyone in the team treats each other with kindness and candor.
I was also surprised by the fact that everyone in the team can speak up their minds freely without minding hierarchies, and that other people in the team will be open to listening and accepting each other’s suggestions.
Finally, I really enjoy the growing mindset that everyone in the team has, and I believe that I have been growing and learning a lot. People in the team will celebrate each other’s victories, but they will also help each other overcome their challenges.

--Who do you think fits in Recursive?

People that can adapt to ever-changing scenarios, that are willing to challenge themselves and step out of their comfort zones, that can communicate and document clearly their thoughts and actions, and that are eager to learn. I think this is true not only for engineers, but for anyone that would like to join our team.
